The supreme is not a state

"The world and the mind are states of being.  The supreme is not a state. It pervades all states, but it is not a state of something else." - Nisargadatta, I Am That

This makes a lot of sense; but, mostly, talk like this raises more questions in my little brain than it answers.  If it is not a state, then I must not be aware of being there; in fact, there is not there and no I to be.  Of course, then why would "I" want to be there? Or, should I say, be not being not there?
